Book Without Remorse: A Mafia Romance Review :

KU subscription.I wish I could give this 4 stars, because there are two things that happened in the book that blew my mind, but overall I thought it was kind of unremarkable, and Nicholas wasn’t very well sketched and his abrupt solution for Sloane’s issues was weird. (It reminded me of Cheech Marin trying to get Kevin Costner to stop thinking so hard about his out-of-nowhere golfing issue in Tin Cup. “Turn your hat around!”)This story starts out describing our FMC Sloane’s life, in which she is an agoraphobic who makes her living as a cam girl. Quite a bit of time is spent showing her with customers and how she copes with always staying inside. One night her cat gets outside, and she is panic-stricken because she cannot force herself to go outside. A man jogging by, MMC Nicholas, stops to help. Attracted to one another, they form a relationship where she bakes for him and he fixes things in her house. He knows what she does for a living, but she doesn’t know that he works for a mobster. The reason he is there is because of one of her customers, who is stalking her and and finally attacks her, setting into motion a series of events beginning with Nicholas kidnapping Sloan to keep her “safe“.So far in the story, we have a standard trope of mafia guy having to kidnap someone because they got involved in a mafia thing. If you’re a fan of this author, you might be surprised that the sex starts out very passionate, but sort of vanilla. I waited for it to ramp up to more kink, but the story was sticking pretty much with Nicholas navigating his relationship with Sloane through a bad situation. When it does move into a D/s relationship, it is rather abrupt, and even I was surprised. So if you’re thinking about reading this book, be assured it it has an HEA but it has to work to get there, including violence, a truly menacing villain, and a D/s relationship.Character-wise, the FMC Sloan is sketched out very nicely, mostly due to the amount of time the author spends showing her coping with her life in a positive manner, although a lot of people might look down on her chosen profession. Nicholas, on the other hand, is not as well fleshed out. He didn’t really seem capable or strong, which probably made the sudden D/s relationship more startling to me.Like many online romances, this one is short on logistics and reasoning, but two things were why I almost gave it 4 stars. Early on in the book Sloane has a customer who is obsessed with her, but she’s not afraid because he doesn’t know who she is. At the same time, we learn that Nicholas’ job is to grab the same guy. A cam session with a customer she doesn’t recognize is done really well and was very suspenseful because of what we know so far.The other thing was the tension leading up to the HEA. For the first time ever reading a book in this sub-genre, I toyed with the idea of not finishing a book so close to the end. I was probably at almost 90%? I’m not sure, but I actually had to force myself to keep reading and, especially given my dislike of the D/s dynamic, it was difficult to do. And I’m glad I did.Even though those two things make me want to talk to other readers, which has never happened after I read an online romance, overall the story was just average and the MMC was just not interesting until the last few pages when the true tension kicked in.There is no cliffhanger but the book does end in a way that promises at least one sequel.
A Russian Bratva Takedown. Nicholas Hopes To Protect Sloane, But As A Witness She Becomes A Liability. Their Sweet & Steamy Romance Is Mixed With Danger & Violence. This is the first book in the Vasiliev Bratva series of mafia romances. The story opens in mid-November in Oklahoma.Ukrainian mob boss Nazar Tereshchenko has gotten bold, and Dimitri “Papa” Vasiliev is not pleased. The Tereshchenkos are out of New Jersey, and small enough not to be a threat as long as they don’t rock the boat. But with recent moves, Papa intends to retaliate and send a clear message. That is a bit of a challenge, though, since the Ukrainians hunker into their mansions, too afraid to go out in public. The Russian Bratva leader decides to send one of his son Alexei’s men on an assignment, ordering him to find Tershchenko’ youngest son and bring him in.Nicholas, thirty-one, came to the United States when he was twelve. Today, his accent is barely detectible. He knows what it is like to be poor and hungry from his youth in Russia, and he appreciates the luxury of living in the states. He works for Alexei Vasiliev, Papa’s son. Unlike Nicholas, Alexei was born in the U.S. Because of his technical expertise, Alexei has taken over a lot of Bratva operations. Nicholas is a big man, so Alexei typically uses him as a bodyguard or bouncer at his club. But it was Papa who gave Nicholas his current assignment. He is known for testing people, and it feels like a test. Nicholas doesn’t mind; he is loyal and committed to the family. He had followed his father into the Bratva. He knows how to follow orders, and he hasn’t been bothered by right and wrong since his mother passed away. He is magnetic, though somewhat introverted. His is soured on women after two years of Cassandra’s games. He goes for months at a time without even thinking of women. His current assignment has him watching one particular woman whose business might excite some men, but Nicholas tries to stay focused on the job at hand.Sloane, twenty-four, loves her life. It is a rather quiet life, but she has Ramona to keep her company. It was Dr. Noah’s suggestion she get a pet, and she adores her cat. She is a businesswoman and runs her own online business – a one woman show, so to speak. Between the internet and delivery service, she doesn’t even need to leave her home. That is quite fortunate, given her agoraphobia. In fact, she hasn’t left her home in six years. She lost her parents to an accident when she was in high school, which only exasperated her anxiety. She lived with her grandparents in California until she was eighteen, but they hardly knew what to do with her. Panic attacks in public made her too afraid to leave home. Her great aunt Trish then brought her to Oklahoma to live, where Sloane’s life continued to get smaller. But her aunt died three years ago, leaving Sloane a house and bills she hardly knew how to pay. She was properly motivated to keep the safety of the roof over her head, however, and eventually made a successful business. There is fierce competition online, but she learned and refined her craft until she was finally able to start putting money away, building a little nest egg. It gives her a sense of security and control. Everything in her life is in order and carefully planned for – she couldn’t ask for more. When Nicholas meets Sloane, he immediately knows she is different. She is genuine and real, unlike the other women he has been around. She reminds him of his mother and his childhood, when times were more innocent. When the handsome stranger comes to her rescue, Sloane finds herself tongue-tied, despite her vast experience talking to men. Being around another person should terrify her, but the excitement she feels around Nicholas isn’t at all scary or debilitating. The pair develops a friendship, but Sloane soon finds herself in the friend zone. Nicholas is almost the perfect gentleman, and even if the idea of romance slips away, she thoroughly enjoys his company. Even Ramona likes him. But soon Sloane learns that she cannot control things as well as she had hoped to. Her life begins to crumble. And the kind man that talked to her for hours at a time turns out to be from the mafia. Hardened and demanding, she feels utterly betrayed as she finds herself swept away from her carefully controlled life. But once she arrives in Brooklyn, things only go downhill. Nicholas might have seemed bad, but she enters a world that makes him pale in comparison. The couple eventually earns a happy ending.Book two of the series, Without Forgiveness, is Alexei and Veronica’s story.Nicholas and Sloane’s story starts out light on the mafia aspect of the story, instead building up the characters. Sloane’s character is rather unique, and her carefully put together world is explored. Her agoraphobia and how her anxiety progressed, her relationships with customers, her business savvy – all help to define her. A good part of the story is spent in Oklahoma, and understanding her helps to paint the picture of just how shocking it is for her to leave home. We learn some about Nicholas during this time, but once the story shifts to Brooklyn, the Bratva aspect really comes into play.Nicholas and Sloane’s story is rather sweet in spite of their jobs. Neither fits the mold of what might be expected for their professions. Nicholas behaves like a gentleman, and though he maintains right and wrong aren’t an issue for him, he seems to have some old-fashioned standards. Sloane has maintained much of her innocence. It seems acting online doesn’t properly prepare her for the real world. Though things start out slow for the couple, their chemistry is great from the start.Nicholas and Sloane’s steamy mafia romance puts an agoraphobic cam girl in the middle of a Russian Bratva takedown. Nicholas hopes to protect Sloane, but as a witness she becomes a liability. Their sweet and steamy romance is mixed with danger and violence. The story is nicely written. My ARC copy has a few inconsistencies and typos, but nothing too bad. The plot is somewhat complex. The characters are complicated and interesting. The story is told in third person. The POV alternates between Nicholas and Sloane, with chapters twenty-two and twenty-six from Alexei’s POV. I rate this book four stars.I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
